Mr. Houle

5th grade Math and Science Teacher

Thanks for a great year!!!  And have a wonderful Summer!

Welcome to the new Westfield Intermediate School!  My name is Mr. Houle and I am looking forward to a great school year! We will be learning about math in groups using manipulatives and learning about science with hands-on lessons and making believe we are molecules, among other things.  The motto for the classroom is “Think About It!”  It doesn’t matter if you’re right or wrong, as long as you are thinking really hard.  Just ask Thomas Edison, who has been described as America’s greatest inventor: “I have not failed, I’ve just found a 1000 ways that won’t work.”  So it’s Okay to make mistakes, and like Thomas Edison said, that’s how we solve problems and learn.

Have you ever noticed that if a teacher lectures for an hour you remember a little bit.  If a teacher includes drawings on the board with pictures and graphs, you remember a little bit more.  If the teacher adds some hands-on visuals and has students work with those things in class the kids retain even more.  And if kids actually make believe they are something, say, a water molecule in the water cycle; or they are protons and electrons in an atom; or they act out the butterfly life cycle, they’ll remember everything!  Those are some of the neat things we’ll be doing. Please click on the Homework link in the upper left box to see assign homework for the day. So let’s have that kind of fun and learn here at WIS!
